It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood

Today was the first official day of autumn, and it felt like it here in northern Florida.  It was a balmy 85 degrees with a gusty, blustery breeze.  The eagles hung out on the boathouse all day, calling to each other and enjoying the breezy conditions.

Since it was such a lovely day, the kids and I decided to take Lucy for a walk after they finished their homework.  Lucy started out prancing and wanting to run, but by the end of our one mile loop, she was dragging!  I think perhaps we need to get her moving a bit more often...especially now that it is so much cooler here.
It was a chamber of commerce day with big, fluffy, puffy, white clouds in the sky.

As soon as the leash came out, Lucy started doing the "Oh-boy-we're-going-for-a-walk" dance...

My elder child decided he would try to embarrass me by wearing the geekiest outfit he could find.

I'm not really sure why.

It was a valiant effort...

but I don't embarrass easily.

However, you can tell by the smirk on his face that HE thought he was hilarious.

We saw a butterfly...

(I have NO idea what those little white things are!  I didn't even see them while I was taking the picture)

and a seaplane...

and flowers...

and more flowers...

and a really pretty berry thing.

The strange looking elder child kept stopping to look for tadpoles.  Because, ya know...he's a boy.  They do that.

I was happy I had my camera with me because I was able to capture the girl doing this...

And the boy doing this

Because they thought I was busy taking pictures of flowers and clouds and stuff, they didn't even notice me taking pictures of them.

Which made me smile.

And giggle just a little.

When we returned home, Lucy drank a lot of water and dribbled it all over my kitchen floor.  I ignored it.

I was in the zone.

I decided to go out and hang with the eagles.

I tried to get a self portrait so I could show you how relaxed I was, and how much I was enjoying this beautiful, gorgeous, blustery day.

It didn't turn out so great, though.

You'll just have to take my word for it.

Wordless Wednesday

Doggy kisses and doing the Hokey Pokey with a cat

Instead of cleaning the messy house this morning, or exercising, or planning something for dinner...I decided to make good use of my time by taking my camera and "documenting" life around here on a Tuesday morning...

I found Paige doing schoolwork.

Jack was taking a nap (until I woke him up)...

Lucy was taking a nap too.
Gus was probably also taking a nap...but I couldn't find him.

Then Lucy decided to come over and cheer the girl up...

...and give her some kisses...which made her giggle...

Then my girl showed me how she can change her voice by pressing on different areas of her throat...

...and completely cracked herself up.

She decided to share the love, and woke Jack up...

...and taught him how to play the Hokey Pokey...

"You put your right foot in, you put your right foot out..."

"And you shake it all about..."

"Hey don't bite me!"

Jack looks for an escape route....

He doesn't appear to be a fan of the Hokey Pokey.

My girl went back to work on French.

I came to my laptop to share this scintillating morning with you.

Girls just want to have fun...and middle-aged mommas just want some sleep!

I have come to the conclusion that I am too old for my daughter to have slumber parties any more.

When she was younger, she had sleepovers several times for her birthdays.  She had sleepovers just for the fun of having her friends over.  She had sleepovers so she and her friends could watch a movie together, or make ice cream sundaes, or just because!  I was always up for a slumber party...the girls would watch movies and sing karaoke and would usually all be sound asleep by midnight - as would I!

It's been a few years since she'd had one though, and the girls are now 13 and 14 years old.  They like to try to stay up all night now...giggling and dancing and squealing.  All.  Night.  Long.

OK. OK...it's wasn't actually all night long.  It only seemed like it was.  They did eventually fall asleep around 2:30 AM.  And they woke up around 7:00 AM.

When I stumbled out of bed at 8:00 the next morning, groping blindly for that life-giving-elixir of coffee, I realized that I'm just too old for this.  I dragged all day long.  I took a nap.  I still felt like the living dead.  All nighters don't work for me anymore.

Either that, or we need a basement.  Stupid Florida houses without basements.  A basement would have enabled ME to sleep, and the girls to giggle and squeal to their heart's content!

Swimming in the pool...

Fencing in the pool...

Waiting for the pizza to arrive...

Still waiting...

Pizza!

"Decorating" the cakes...

Yum?

Hmmm...someone appears to be sneaking a taste of the frosting!

Good grief!
No wonder they were up all night long!

Group hug!

Group...pose?

More swimming the next morning.

Whilst I stumbled around all bleary eyed...groggily looking for coffee.

Hmmph.
